U.S. Military Community in the West Palatinate
American Life Between Baumholder, Kaiserslautern and Ramstein
For many decades, the West Palatinate has been closely connected to the U.S. Armed Forces stationed in Germany. A large international community has developed around Ramstein, Kaiserslautern and Baumholder and has become an integral part of our region.
Service members, civilian employees and their families do not only live on or near U.S. military installations. Many choose to live in the surrounding towns and villages, renting or buying houses and apartments and becoming part of everyday life in the local community.
Over the decades, the individual military installations have become part of a much larger German-American community and living region.
Kaiserslautern Military Community – One of the Largest U.S. Communities in Europe
The Kaiserslautern Military Community (KMC) is at the heart of the American presence in the West Palatinate. Rather than being one single installation, the KMC consists of an extensive network of U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army facilities.
In addition to Ramstein Air Base, these include several installations in and around Kaiserslautern, such as Vogelweh, Kapaun, Kleber Kaserne, Daenner Kaserne, Panzer Kaserne, Rhine Ordnance Barracks and Pulaski Barracks.
Other important U.S. military locations can be found in Landstuhl, Miesau and Sembach.
Ramstein Air Base – An International Hub
Ramstein Air Base is the best-known U.S. military installation in Germany and one of the most important U.S. Air Force locations in Europe.
Located between Kaiserslautern and the western part of the West Palatinate, the influence of Ramstein Air Base extends far beyond the city of Ramstein-Miesenbach itself.
Many members of the military community choose to live in the surrounding towns and villages. As a result, the entire area between Ramstein, Landstuhl, Weilerbach, Kaiserslautern, Kusel and the Glan Valley has strong ties to the American community.
Baumholder – “The Rock”
Baumholder has also been part of the American military presence in Rhineland-Palatinate for generations.
With Smith Barracks, Wetzel Kaserne, the Baumholder Training Area and Baumholder Airfield, Baumholder remains another important U.S. Army location.
The installation is closely connected to the surrounding communities and the Birkenfeld, Idar-Oberstein and Kusel areas. This means that the residential area attractive to American families extends far beyond the immediate vicinity of the military installations.
Weilerbach – A New Center for Military Medicine
The new Rhine Ordnance Barracks Medical Center near Weilerbach is one of the largest U.S. military infrastructure projects in Germany.
The new U.S. military hospital is planned to replace the current Landstuhl Regional Medical Center as well as the medical facilities of the 86th Medical Group at Ramstein Air Base.
With numerous medical departments and several thousand employees, Weilerbach will become another major hub for the military community.
This development will further increase the importance of the entire area between Kaiserslautern, Weilerbach, Ramstein and Landstuhl.
One Military Community – Many Locations
The American presence in our region extends far beyond Ramstein and Kaiserslautern.
Ramstein – Kaiserslautern – Weilerbach – Landstuhl – Miesau – Sembach – Baumholder, together with numerous other facilities, form a network that stretches across large parts of the West Palatinate and the surrounding area.
Between these locations are many smaller towns and villages offering attractive housing options for American families.

Living in Our Region
Being stationed here does not mean you have to live right next to your duty station.
The area between Idar-Oberstein, Birkenfeld, Baumholder, Kusel, Altenglan, Lauterecken, Wolfstein, Schönenberg-Kübelberg, Bruchmühlbach-Miesau, Ramstein, Landstuhl and Weilerbach offers a wide variety of places to live.
From small towns and traditional German villages to more urban locations, and from apartments to single-family homes with large yards, the region offers many different housing options.
Convenient access to the various military installations, good transportation links and the beautiful countryside make this part of Germany particularly attractive to American service members, civilian employees and their families.
German-American Life Is Part of Our Region
The American presence has shaped the West Palatinate for decades. Service members have become neighbors, and temporary assignments have developed into friendships, business relationships and, in many cases, lasting connections to the region.
English has become part of everyday life in many local communities. Landlords, real estate professionals, tradespeople, shops, restaurants and other local businesses have decades of experience working with American customers.
If you are new to the area, you may be arriving in a different country – but you are coming to a region where American families have been part of the community for generations.
Live. Work. Belong.
Welcome to the West Palatinate. Welcome to our region.
